LAURA KAULEN WINS ERIE MARATHON
Laura Kaulen (pictured in middle) from Hilliard Ohio won the Eire Marathon September 14 in Erie Pennsylvania. The married 38 year old mother of three and a special needs teacher not only broke the women’s course record by more than 12 minutes with a time of 2:42.12 but finished second overall. Laura’s effort got her an invite to the 2016 U.S. Olympic Team Marathon Trials in Los Angles, California on February 13, 2016.
Laura ran for Youngstown State University from 1994-2000. She ran post collegiately for the Youngstown Road Runners Club until 2004 when she missed qualifying for the Olympic Marathon Trials. At that time the qualifying standard was 2:48. Her fastest marathon at that time was 2:53. She took 7 years off to start a family. She started running again in 2011 and soon got more serious when she met her coach, Brenda Hawley. She's been running competitively since 2012 and realized she could go after her Olympic dream in 2013. She ran 2:46 at the California International Marathon in December 2013. Then 9 months later she broke her PR by 4 1/2 minutes qualifying at the age of 38.
Laura is sponsored by the Columbus Running Company, Coughlin Chevrolet in Pataskala, and Premier at Sawmill Athletic Club. Her biggest supporter is her husband Matt Kaulen.
